What a Blood Clot Means

A blood clot is a mass formed when blood cells, platelets, and proteins stick together. This natural process helps stop bleeding when you get hurt. Usually, after healing, your body breaks down the clot on its own. However, sometimes clots form inside blood vessels without injury or don’t dissolve as they should. When a clot stays attached to the wall of a blood vessel, it’s called a thrombus. If it breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream, it becomes an embolus. These clots can block blood flow in other parts of the body, which may cause serious health problems.

Why Blood Clots Matter in Cancer Care

Blood clots are especially important in cancer care because cancer and some cancer treatments can increase the risk of abnormal clotting. Clots often form in deep veins of the legs or pelvis, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
