What Cytokines Are and How They Work

Cytokines are proteins made by immune cells and other types of cells in the body. They act as messengers that help control how the immune system responds to infections, cancer, and other diseases. Some cytokines encourage immune cells to grow and become active, while others help slow down immune responses to keep them balanced. Examples include interleukins, interferons, and colony-stimulating factors.

In cancer treatment, cytokines can play several roles. Some cytokines are used as medicines to help the immune system attack cancer cells. For example, interferons can boost the activity of certain immune cells that fight cancer. This can reduce risks such as infections or anemia.

Understanding Cytokine Release Syndrome and Related Side Effects

Some newer cancer treatments, like CAR T-cell therapy, can cause a strong immune reaction known as cytokine release syndrome (CRS). This happens when many immune cells release cytokines all at once, leading to symptoms like fever, low blood pressure, rash, or trouble breathing. CRS can be serious but is treatable. Medicines such as Actemra (tocilizumab) are used to manage CRS by blocking certain cytokines and calming the immune response.
