What Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma Means

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, often called DIPG, is a rare type of brain tumor that starts in the pons, a part of the brain stem located at the base of the brain just above the spinal cord. The pons plays a vital role in controlling many automatic body functions like breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure, as well as muscle movements involved in seeing, hearing, walking, talking, and eating. DIPG develops from glial cells, which support and protect nerve cells in the brain.

Why DIPG Matters in Cancer Care

DIPG mainly affects children, especially those between 5 and 10 years old, though it can occur in younger children and teens. It is a fast-growing tumor that spreads through the brain stem, making it very hard to treat. Because the brain stem controls essential life functions, tumors in this area can cause serious symptoms and challenges. DIPG’s location and growth pattern mean that surgery is usually not an option, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and slowing tumor growth.
