Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a rare condition where abnormal cells grow inside the uterus from tissue that forms after an egg is fertilized. These cells, called trophoblasts, normally surround the fertilized egg and help form the placenta, which connects the developing baby to the mother. In GTD, these cells grow in an unusual way, sometimes forming tumors. Most of these tumors are benign, meaning they are not cancer and usually do not spread. However, some types of GTD are malignant, which means they can invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body.

GTD includes several related conditions, such as hydatidiform mole (also called molar pregnancy), invasive mole, choriocarcinoma, placental site trophoblastic tumor, and epithelioid trophoblastic tumor. The most common type is the hydatidiform mole, which often looks like a pregnancy but is not viable. Malignant forms like choriocarcinoma are more aggressive but often respond well to treatment.
