What Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Means
Human Papillomavirus, or HPV, is a large group of more than 200 related viruses. Some types infect the skin and cause common warts, while others infect moist areas of the body such as the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, mouth, and throat. HPV spreads mainly through intimate skin-to-skin contact, most often during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. HPV types are divided into low-risk and high-risk groups. Low-risk types can cause warts but rarely lead to cancer. High-risk types can cause changes in cells that may develop into cancer if not found and treated.
Why HPV Matters in Cancer Care
Almost all cervical cancers are caused by long-lasting infections with high-risk HPV types. HPV is also linked to other cancers including anal, oropharyngeal (throat), penile, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. Persistent infection with high-risk HPV can cause abnormal cell changes called precancers, which may progress to cancer over time. Detecting these changes early through screening tests can prevent cancer or catch it when treatment is easier.
