What Hypoxia Means in Everyday Medical Language

These low-oxygen areas are called hypoxic regions. Hypoxia is different from low oxygen in the blood (hypoxemia); it specifically refers to oxygen shortage in the tissues themselves.

Why Hypoxia Can Matter in Cancer Care

Low oxygen in tumors can make cancer cells harder to kill with treatments like radiation therapy and some chemotherapy drugs. This is because oxygen helps these treatments work better. A regular PET scan without these tracers does not show hypoxia.
