What Immune Cells Are

Some cancers, like certain lymphomas, come from immune cells themselves. For example, B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that starts in B cells. Understanding immune cells helps doctors diagnose, stage, and plan treatment for these cancers. Some tests use special medicines that attach to immune cells to show where cancer might be in the body. Other treatments aim to help immune cells work better to kill cancer cells, especially after chemotherapy has reduced tumor size.

What Patients Might See or Hear About Immune Cells

Patients may hear about immune cells when doctors explain blood tests, scans, or treatments. For example, a scan using a medicine called 111In-ibritumomab tiuxetan (also known as 111In-Zevalin) targets B cells to help find lymphoma cells. Another example is 1-Methyl-D-Tryptophan, an experimental substance studied to help T cells work better after chemotherapy. What Immune Cells Do Not Automatically Mean

Seeing the term immune cell or related medicines does not mean a diagnosis or treatment is certain. For example, a scan that shows immune cells does not always mean cancer is present, as normal immune cells can also appear. Experimental treatments like 1-Methyl-D-Tryptophan are still being studied and are not standard care.
