What Isolated Limb Perfusion Means

Isolated Limb Perfusion is a medical procedure designed to deliver chemotherapy drugs directly to an arm or leg affected by cancer. During the treatment, blood flow to and from the limb is temporarily stopped using a tourniquet, a tight band wrapped around the limb. This isolation allows doctors to give a very high dose of chemotherapy directly into the blood vessels of the limb without exposing the rest of the body to these strong drugs. Sometimes, the limb is also warmed to about 42 degrees Celsius (about 108 degrees Fahrenheit) to help the chemotherapy work better against the tumor.

Why It Can Matter in Cancer Care

This technique is especially useful for cancers that are limited to a limb, such as in transit metastatic melanoma, where cancer cells spread along lymph vessels in the arm or leg but have not spread widely throughout the body. Because the chemotherapy is focused on one area, it can be given at higher doses than would be safe if given to the whole body. This helps to better attack the tumor while reducing side effects that come from chemotherapy circulating everywhere. However, isolated limb perfusion does not treat cancer that has spread beyond the limb or tiny cancer cells that may be elsewhere in the body.
