What Methemoglobin Means

Methemoglobin is a special form of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Unlike normal hemoglobin, methemoglobin cannot bind or carry oxygen. Normally, only a very small amount (about 1 to 2%) of hemoglobin is methemoglobin. When this amount increases, it can reduce the blood’s ability to deliver oxygen to tissues, leading to a condition called methemoglobinemia.

Because symptoms depend on both methemoglobin percentage and overall hemoglobin levels, it’s important to consider the whole picture. For example, a methemoglobin level of 1.5 g/dL might be 10% of total hemoglobin in a healthy person but nearly 19% in someone with anemia.
