What Photocoagulation Means
Photocoagulation is a medical procedure that uses a strong, focused beam of light, usually from a laser, to seal off or destroy blood vessels or tissue. It is most commonly used in the eye to treat certain retinal disorders. The laser creates tiny burns that cause scarring, which helps prevent abnormal blood vessels from leaking or growing. This can slow or stop the progression of eye diseases that might otherwise lead to vision loss.
While photocoagulation can help protect remaining vision, it cannot restore vision that has already been lost. The treatment is usually done as an outpatient procedure and takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Why Photocoagulation Can Matter in Cancer Care
In cancer care, photocoagulation may be used to destroy blood vessels that tumors need to grow. By sealing off these vessels, the treatment can help limit tumor growth. However, this use is less common and depends on the type and location of the tumor.
Photocoagulation is also relevant when radiation therapy causes side effects such as radiation proctitis, which involves bleeding in the rectum. In some cases, laser treatments similar to photocoagulation may be used to manage bleeding.

If photocoagulation is part of a treatment plan, patients may hear about it in relation to eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy or macular edema.
