This process is the basis of photodynamic therapy (PDT), a treatment that uses both the drug and light to target cancer. The photosensitizer collects more in cancer or abnormal cells than in healthy cells, which helps focus the treatment on the tumor while reducing damage to nearby tissue.

Photosensitizers are often carbon-based molecules and have been studied since the early 1900s. They exist naturally in plants, like chlorophyll, which is sensitive to light. In cancer care, photosensitizers are carefully designed to be activated by light that can reach the tumor, usually near the surface or lining of organs.
