What Plasmablastic Lymphoma Means

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive cancer that affects the immune system’s B-cells, specifically plasmablasts. Plasmablasts are immature plasma cells, which normally help the body fight infections by producing antibodies. In PBL, these plasmablasts become cancerous and multiply uncontrollably. This type of lymphoma is classified as a large B-cell lymphoma and was officially recognized by the World Health Organization in 2017 as part of a group of lymphomas with plasmablastic features.

More than half of PBL cases involve infection with Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), a common virus that can sometimes contribute to cancer development. PBL often occurs in people with weakened immune systems, such as those living with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, or others on immunosuppressive treatments. However, a small number of cases happen in people with normal immune function.

Why Plasmablastic Lymphoma Matters in Cancer Care

PBL is important to understand because it tends to grow quickly and can be difficult to treat. It often appears as rapidly enlarging masses in soft tissues, which may be painful, ulcerated, or bleed. For example, plasmablastic plasma cell lymphoma is linked to multiple myeloma and may show bone damage or abnormal proteins in blood or urine, which are not typical in PBL.
