They are also linked to some non-cancerous conditions where benign tumors, called hamartomas, develop in various parts of the body.

Why PTEN Can Matter in Cancer Care

Changes in the PTEN gene can allow cancer cells to grow and survive when they normally would not. In some breast cancers that are hormone receptor-positive and HER2-negative, mutations in PTEN or related genes (like PIK3CA or AKT1) can cause cancer cells to grow uncontrollably. For these cancers, a targeted drug called capivasertib (brand name Truqap) may be used alongside hormone therapy. Capivasertib works by blocking a protein called AKT, which cancer cells need to grow and survive. This targeted approach aims to slow or stop cancer growth more precisely than traditional chemotherapy.
