What RTK Means in Everyday Medical Language

Receptor tyrosine kinases, or RTKs, are proteins found on the surface of many cells in the body. You can think of them as tiny switches or antennas that receive signals from outside the cell. These signals tell the cell when to grow, divide, move, or survive. RTKs help cells communicate with each other and play a key role in normal cell functions.

Sometimes, the genes that make RTKs have changes or mutations. These changes may cause RTKs to become overactive or appear in higher amounts than usual. When this happens, cells may grow uncontrollably, which can lead to cancer.

Why RTKs Matter in Cancer Care

RTKs are important in cancer care because they can drive the growth and spread of cancer cells. When RTKs are mutated or overactive, they send constant signals encouraging cancer cells to multiply and survive. This makes them a target for certain cancer treatments.

Some cancer drugs, called receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors, work by blocking these overactive RTKs. By blocking the signals, these treatments aim to slow down or stop cancer growth. For example, Herceptin is a well-known drug that targets the HER2 receptor, a type of RTK, in some breast cancers. Other drugs, like regorafenib (also called Stivarga), block multiple RTKs and may also stop tumors from making new blood vessels, which tumors need to grow.

Doctors may mention RTKs when explaining how certain drugs work or why specific tests are done.
