Stage I is further divided into IA and IB based on how deeply the cancer has invaded the esophagus layers. In stage IA, cancer is found in the mucosa (the innermost lining) or the thin muscle layer just beneath it. In stage IB, the cancer may have grown into the submucosa (a layer under the mucosa) or the thicker muscle layer.
