What Superior Vena Cava Syndrome Means

Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) occurs when the superior vena cava, a large vein that carries blood from the head, neck, arms, and upper chest back to the heart, becomes partly or fully blocked. This blockage is usually caused by a tumor pressing on the vein, which slows or stops blood flow. When this happens, blood can back up, leading to swelling and other symptoms in the areas drained by this vein.
