What Trichothiodystrophy Means

Trichothiodystrophy, often called TTD, is a rare inherited disorder that mainly affects the hair and other parts of the body that develop from the outer layer of the embryo, called the ectoderm. The name breaks down into parts meaning "hair" (tricho), "sulfur" (thio), and "poor nourishment" or "wasting away" (dystrophy). People with TTD have hair that is dry, brittle, and breaks easily. When viewed under a special microscope with polarized light, the hair shows a distinctive striped pattern called a "tiger-tail" pattern. This happens because the hair has low sulfur content, which is unusual and helps doctors recognize the condition.

TTD is caused by changes (mutations) in several different genes. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive way, meaning a child must inherit the gene changes from both parents to have the condition. There are different forms of TTD, some with extreme sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity) and some without. These forms are grouped into syndromes with names like BIDS, PBIDS, IBIDS, and PIBIDS, which describe the combination of symptoms a person has.
