Biofeedback
Biofeedback uses sensors and real-time visual, auditory, or tactile feedback to help a person learn to regulate body functions that are usually outside ordinary awareness, such as heart rate variability, breathing rhythm, muscle tension, skin conductance, temperature, or EEG brainwave patterns. In oncology, biofeedback belongs primarily in supportive care and psycho-oncology rather than direct tumor treatment.
The most cancer-specific threads found in this expansion are heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BFB) for autonomic balance, distress, sleep, fatigue, menopausal symptoms, and quality of life; neurofeedback for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN); EMG biofeedback for muscle tension and pain, including post-mastectomy pain trials; and wearable EEG meditation feedback around breast-cancer surgery. NCI lists biofeedback as a mind-body CAM practice where patients use special machines to learn to control body functions such as heart rate and blood pressure.
The evidence picture is promising but uneven. A 2022 scoping review concluded that HRV biofeedback in cancer patients is still heterogeneous and limited, but reported improvements in symptoms and well-being across studies. A randomized MD Anderson pilot trial found neurofeedback improved CIPN symptoms compared with waitlist control. A 2025 breast-cancer survivor RCT found remote smartphone HRV biofeedback improved menopausal symptoms and psychological well-being versus controls. Other device-assisted meditation/biofeedback studies show feasibility but mixed between-group effects.

- May have supportive, historical, mechanistic, or patient-preference relevance depending on the specific use.

- Cancer-specific benefit is not established from the current protocol record.
